MACAO, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- Macao's total merchandise export decreased by 17.2 percent year-on-year in August and merchandise import dropped by 4.3 percent year-on-year due to typhoons' impact, the special administrative region's statistics department said on Wednesday.


Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that both total merchandise import and export for August 2017 registered year-on-year decreases attributable to the catastrophic Typhoon Hato and less destructive but still troublesome Typhoon Pakhar.


Total merchandise export amounted to 805 million patacas (about 100 million U.S. dollars), down by 17.2 percent year-on-year. Total merchandise import dropped by 4.3 percent year-on-year to 6.33 billion patacas (about 787 million dollars), of which imports of watches and gold jewelry fell by 22.6 percent and 13.0 percent respectively. Merchandise trade deficit in August amounted to 5.53 billion patacas (about 688 million dollars).


However#1# from January to August 2017, total value of merchandise export still increased by 9.0 percent year-on-year to 7.54 billion patacas (about 938 million dollars). Total value of merchandise import grew by 4.1 percent year-on-year to 47.41 billion patacas (about 5.90 billion dollars). Merchandise trade deficit widened to 39.87 billion patacas (about 4.96 billion dollars) for the first eight months of 2017.


Analysed by destination, merchandise export to the Chinese mainland increased by 17.6 percent year-on-year in the first eight months of 2017, of which exports to the nine provinces of the Pan-Pearl River Delta grew by 11.3 percent. Furthermore#2# exports to the Hong Kong SAR, the EU and the United States rose by 14.3 percent, 0.1 percent and 14.3 percent respectively.


By place of origin, merchandise import from the Chinese mainland and the Portuguese-speaking Countries decreased by 5.8 percent and 5.4 percent respectively year-on-year in the first eight months of 2017#3# whereas imports from the EU increased by 11.3 percent.

PARIS, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- Ligue 1 members Rennes Wednesday announced to sack coach Philippe Montanier and to appoint former Montpellier manager Rolland Courbis until the end of the season.


The Breton outfit made the decision just one day after they were dumped out of the French Cup round of 32 by Ligue 2 side Bourg-en-Bress.


Last month#4# Montainier's team was also bowed out of the League Cup after losing to Ligue 1 rivals Toulouse 3-1 on Dec. 15 in a last 16 game at home.


Montainier said after Tuesday's game that he was "ashamed" for the club and the fans after watching his side lost 3-1 at home.


And Rennes president Rene Ruello met with the former Real Sociedad and Valenciennes boss on Wednesday morning and informed him that his time at the club had come to an end.


Montainier took charge of Rennes in 2013 and extended his contract until 2019 after leading the team to ninth in Ligue 1 last summer.


The side, which's sixth in the league standings with five points behind second-place Monaco after losing only four games this season, has won only two of the 10 home games in Ligue 1.


Courbis resigned as Montpellier coach during the Christmas break while having complained about "nervous fatigue", and was hired by Rennes last week as a special advisor to Ruello.


CAIRO#5# Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- At least four people were killed and ten others injured in a blast in Egypt's Giza province near the capital Cairo on Thursday evening, the Egyptian state TV reported.


However, state-run MENA news agency reported that only three, including two policemen#6# were killed in the explosion.


MENA quoted a security source as saying that a police force stormed an apartment in Giza's Mariotya district that was used as a hideout by a group of terrorists.


The explosion was caused by a bomb found at the apartment that went off as policemen were checking it out, MENA reported.


12 others were injured in the blast, of whom two policemen sustained critical injuries, according to MENA.
